Guide to the River Region's Communities

Montgomery

Montgomery is located at the junction of interstate 65 and interstate 85 in south central Alabama and is the capital city of the state. Montgomery is 160 miles southwest of Atlanta, 90 miles south of Birmingham and 155 northeast of Mobile. It's a short 3 hour drive to the beaches of the gulf, 2½ hours to Atlanta and about 5 hours to New Orleans.

The population of the City of Montgomery, according to the 2000 census was 201,568 and Greater Metropolitan Area showed a population of 333,055.

The Average Annual Temperature is 67.2 degrees and the Average Annual Rainfall is 44.46 inches. The Average Winter Temperature is 49.4 degrees and the Average Summer Temperature is 83.6. It snows once in two or three years and usually does not accumulate.

Prattville

Prattville is located across the Alabama River and to the northwest of Montgomery. Access to Prattville is easy from Montgomery as it is served by three exits from interstate 65. Travel time from downtown Montgomery to downtown Prattville via I-65 is about twenty minutes.

The population of Prattville is growing very fast as a result of a growing industrial base and because many people who work in Montgomery are choosing to live there. The 2000 census showed a population of 24,303 for the city and 43,671 for Autauga County.

Millbrook

Millbrook lies across the Alabama River, east of I-65 and north of Montgomery. Access to Millbrook from Montgomery is two exits on I-65 and takes about 20 minutes.

Millbrook is the largest city in Elmore County with a population of 10,386 based on the US Census Bureau 2000 census and another estimated 7,000 persons residing within its 3 mile police jurisdiction.

Wetumpka

Wetumpka is located northeast of Montgomery on the Coosa River in Elmore County. It is accessed via Highway 231 from Montgomery and is about 25 to 30 minutes from downtown to downtown.

Wetumpka's population as of the 2000 census was 5,726 with a total of 65,874 in Elmore County.

The climate is the same as in Montgomery.
